Coaching for Humans, by a Human

Coaching for Humans - Growth and Connection in Nature.

Let’s face it—life is messy. We’re all navigating a world full of challenges, emotions, and uncertainties, trying to make sense of it all while staying true to ourselves. As a coach, I don’t claim to have all the answers. In fact, the reason I call myself a "Human Coach" is because I’m human too—flawed, growing, and learning every day. And that’s exactly what makes this work so meaningful.

Embracing the Complexity of Being Human

Being human means experiencing the full range of emotions, from joy and excitement to pain and frustration. It means making mistakes, learning from them, and sometimes making the same mistakes again. It means carrying the weight of inherited patterns and societal expectations while trying to carve out your own path.

As a Human Coach, I don’t shy away from this complexity. Instead, I embrace it. I believe that our struggles and imperfections are what make us human, and they’re also what make growth possible. My role isn’t to "fix" anyone or to pretend I have it all figured out. It’s to walk alongside my clients as a fellow human being, offering guidance, support, and tools to help them navigate their own journeys.

Why Coaching for Humans Needs to Be Human

In a world that often feels impersonal and disconnected, coaching needs to be human. It needs to be rooted in empathy, authenticity, and connection. Here’s why:

  • Empathy: People don’t need someone to tell them what to do; they need someone who understands what they’re going through. As a Human Coach, I strive to meet my clients where they are, with compassion and without judgment.

  • Authenticity: I don’t believe in putting on a facade or pretending to be perfect. By showing up as my true self, I create a space where my clients feel safe to do the same.

  • Connection: True transformation happens in the context of a genuine relationship. Coaching isn’t about following a formula; it’s about building trust and working together to uncover what’s possible.

The Power of Vulnerability

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned as a coach is the power of vulnerability. When I share my own experiences—my struggles, my growth, and my humanity—it creates a space for my clients to do the same. Vulnerability isn’t a weakness; it’s a strength. It’s what allows us to connect with others and with ourselves on a deeper level.

The Power of Choice: Observations on Pain, Belief, and Transformation

Introduction: A Personal Journey

For years, I worked as a personal trainer, helping people achieve physical transformations. I even achieved profound changes in my own body, but something was missing. Despite the external progress, I still felt insecure and "not enough" on the inside. This realization led me to explore the deeper connection between the mind and body, and how our beliefs shape our reality. Over time, I began to notice patterns—not just in myself, but in the people I worked with—and these observations have profoundly influenced my approach to health and well-being.

The Subconscious Mind: A Resonating Truth

One passage from Christian D. Larson’s The Great Within deeply resonates with me and has shaped my understanding of the mind-body connection:

"The mind of man is conscious and subconscious, objective and subjective, external and internal. The conscious mind acts, the subconscious reacts; the conscious mind produces the impression, the subconscious produces the expression; the conscious mind determines what is to be done, the subconscious supplies the mental material and the necessary power. The subconscious mind is the great within—an inner mental world from which all things proceed that appear in the being of man."

This idea—that the subconscious mind reacts to the impressions made by the conscious mind—has helped me understand how our thoughts and beliefs influence not only our mental state but also our physical reality. Every conscious action creates an impression on the subconscious, and the subconscious, in turn, expresses that impression in our personality, behavior, and even our health.

My Back Pain: A Lesson in Identity

For several years, I struggled with back pain caused by overestimating my lifting capabilities. Initially, the pain was purely physical, but over time, it became something more. I found myself playing the victim of the accident, identifying with the pain as if it were a part of who I was. There was even a period when, if someone asked about my back, I would say, "I’m okay, but my back is not."

People found it funny, but for me, it was my reality. I had separated myself from the pain—I was not my back pain. This shift in perspective was a turning point. I began to consciously choose health, and my mind followed that choice. Over time, the pain became a part of my past.

Observations from My Work

As a personal trainer, I’ve worked with people since 2018, and I’ve noticed a recurring pattern: many people unconsciously identify with their illnesses or limitations. They say things like, "I’m this way because of my COPD" or "I can’t do that because of my arthrosis." These statements reveal how deeply they’ve internalized their conditions as part of their identity.

During my classes, I sometimes see glimpses of a different reality. When they’re focused on the present moment, moving their bodies, they temporarily step out of that identity. But afterward, they often return to their default mindset, where the illness or limitation defines them.

This resistance to change is not just physical—it’s mental and emotional. For example, my last girlfriend experienced knee pain that was tied to unresolved trauma from her past. Even though she noticed benefits from the exercises I recommended, she struggled to stay consistent. It was as if the pain had become a part of her identity, and she was unconsciously afraid to let it go.

The Power of Choice

What I’ve learned from my own journey and from working with others is that healing and transformation begin with a choice. It’s not always an easy choice, and it often requires stepping out of the comfort zone of familiar pain or limitation.

As Larson writes, "The conscious mind determines what is to be done, the subconscious supplies the mental material and the necessary power." When we consciously choose health, growth, or change, our subconscious mind begins to align with that choice, creating the conditions for transformation.

Moving Forward: A New Path

These observations have inspired me to transition from personal training to working with people on a deeper level as a Human Coach. I want to help people not only improve their physical health but also explore the beliefs and emotions that may be holding them back. This work is about more than just fitness—it’s about helping people reconnect with their true potential and create a new reality for themselves.

Conclusion: A Call to Awareness

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that we are not our pain, our illness, or our limitations. These things may be part of our experience, but they do not define us. By becoming more self-aware and making conscious choices, we can begin to rewrite the story we tell ourselves and create a healthier, more empowered life.

The journey isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it. After all, as Larson reminds us:

"The subconscious mind is the great within—an inner mental world from which all things proceed."

The power to change begins within us.
